What Are The Wind Chill Influencing Factors?

Ambient temperature or outdoor temperature (T) and wind speed (Windsfc) are the two most influencing factors on the wind chill. How much skin is exposed and humidity also have a say.

You can either find online heat index calculators to map the result for you or calculate the levels of cold yourself based on the formula:

(0.4275 × T × Windsfc ^0.16 x T ) + (0.6215 × T) + 35.74 – (Windsfc ^0.16 x 35.75) = Wind Chill

Other factors might also have a say in the wind chill aside from wind speed and ambient temp, including:

  • Humidity
  • Precipitation
  • Human body perspiration/ ambient body heat/ heat loss
  • Outerwear and clothing

How Dangerous Is A Wind Chill?

The severe frostbites in extreme wind chills might crystalize and free your body tissues, leading to amputation and even infection. These effects can wreck total damage to your body within only 30 minutes, especially for older riders or those with medical conditions.

In even more serious cases, hypothermia will take place, shut down your body and make you fall asleep in the middle of your ride. It would be a miracle if you could come out of that without accidents!

Some Tips to Ride Against The Heavy Winds for Bike Riders

  • Always check the climate and weather before plunging head-on to any riding area.
  • Buy safety goggles (as thick as possible without compromising your visual line) to keep your eyes from dust/extreme moisture.
  • Dress with many layers, wear a scarf and gloves.
  • Do not forget to tuck your legs and arms as close to your bike as possible.
  • Stay hydrated and say no to alcohol.
  • Beware of Hypothermia symptoms like shivering, fumbling hands, exhaustion, or drowsiness.

What Motorcycle Type Is Suitable for Riding In The Wind?

Heavy motorcycles will be the best choice for windy riding, as they are much less prone to being pushed around like lighter bikes. Installing fairings (the ones you often spot on sport bikes or tour bikes) is a great idea, too, since they can cut through strong wind easily.

What Wind Should You Never Ride In?

Wind speeds beyond 50 MPH can be extremely dangerous (even for heavy bikes) if you have zero prior experience. And, needless to say, tornados, hurricane-driven winds, or any area with strong-wind warnings are totally out of the question.

Conclusion

Although there are many wind chill motorcycle calculators on the Internet, you can refer to our inclusive chart if that is more convenient for you.

Think twice before bringing your beloved bike to wind beyond 50 MPH, and remember all the extra precaution tips to ensure no bad outcomes, like motorcycle accidents or collisions.
